Alf Pappalardo runs a family farm in Queensland, Australia. They maintain 90,000 orchard trees based on about 1,000 hectares of land. It is mainly sugar canes and mango trees. Alf has acquired a GreenTec Multi Carrier HXF 3302 and Quadsaw LRS 2402 to help with the tree trimming in the orchard.
“After harvest, it is the critical time that we want to get in there and hedge as soon as we can to promote that new flush. Traditionally, we have had contractors that come in and do all the hedging for us. As costs have risen, we found that we were not getting enough value, especially for the skirting that we had done,” said Alf Pappalardo.
Alf had to find a better way to trim trees on his orchard farm. He did some research on the internet and found DTE Equipment which is GreenTec’s dealer in Australia. Jacob Millar from DTE Equipment guided him to the GreenTec Multi Carrier HXF 3302 and Quadsaw LRS 2402 solution.
“When my father saw the hedger he asked me two questions: How much was it and what the hell are we going to cut with this toy?,” said Alf Pappalardo.
Later in the year, Alf could not get a contractor in, and it started raining mid harvest. So they got the saw out and started doing the tree trimming themselves.
“It has absolutely exceeded all our expectations and we have paid for this saw in one season of hedging. It is really an awesome saw. It has done everything that Jacob said it was going to do,” said Alf Pappalardo.
“The Multi Carrier HXF 3302 has a breakaway system on it so that if you come up to a big piece of timber or you hit a pole, it actually breaks away from the machine to stop any damage. It also got a built-in hydraulic function. I always say to Jacob whoever designed it was a legend because it actually stalls the saws out. The saws are running at like 3000 rpm and because they are running so fast, you get this super clean cut. When it hits the timber, it just slices it straight off,” said Alf Pappalardo.
“The most impressive parts about the whole thing is basically the reliability and the strength of the machine, the low cost to get into the machine, the quick and easiness that it is to attach to any of the tractors you got on the farm as well as the breakaway system and the high tip speed for that clean cut. It is all just a great package and you have not had to outlay a whole lot of money.
Now we have got the convenience to get straight in after harvest and go. We can also go in all conditions. Rain, hail or shine, we can prune because we got the lighter machine. We are using very little fuel. It is very efficient.
The cost savings that we are going to have with this particular machine over the next 5 and 10 years is going to be quite a sum of money. We are looking at buying a second and third machine and possibly joining two saws together to save even more time and money. I would recommend the GreenTec saw to any guys with orchards,” said Alf Pappalardo.
